Empirical

Winners of the Music of Black Origin (MOBO) award in 2010 and a highlight of the 2011 London Jazz Festival, Empirical's smart post-bop style has drawn admiring notices on both sides of the Atlantic. Their debut recording went on to be voted Jazzwise magazine's album of the year, and Mojo magazine's jazz album of the year.

Expertly incorporating elements of classical, African and Cuban musical forms into its original, sophisticated, fresh-sounding jazz, Empirical make a point of not being centered around a specific front line or leader; it is very much a complete band, each member contributing equally, adding their own facets to the overall sound.

2012 will see Empirical on a full UK tour to mark the release of a brand new, and much anticipated, album. Featuring Nathanial Facey on alto-saxophone, Lewis Wright on vibes and glockenspiel, double-bassist Tom Farmer and drummer Shaney Forbes.

"Empirical could turn out to be one of the most important bands in British Jazz history" - Jazzwise

Thursday 19 April:
An Evening with Pen Hadow

Pen Hadow rose to international fame when, after 15 years of unrelenting effort, he finally achieved his extraordinary goal to become the first person to trek solo from Canada to the North Geographic Pole – a feat which has not been repeated. Within months he went on to become the only Briton to have trekked without resupply, both the North and South Poles.

Pen is now dedicated to improving scientific and public understanding of the natural world. In 2009, he founded Geo Mission, a pioneering environmental sponsorship organisation, which engages global businesses with the high profile work of scientists addressing the major environmental issues of our time.

He is a regular contributor on environmental issues to The Times and The Independent, amongst other publications.

Pen will talk about his life and work, with illustrations from his expeditions. Calstock Arts is pleased to host this event in association with Tavistock Festival.

Helen Porter and Pete Rosser

Helen and Pete perform an eclectic mix of material, ranging from 1930s cabaret songs to their own compositions, always with jazz at its heart. Pete’s solo piano performances blend Joplin's ragtime, Ellington's swing, Monk's bebop and the contemporary stylings of Jarrett and Mehldau, with a little tango on the side. Helen accompanies on vocals with her dramatic and seductive voice

Saturday 17 March:
Film Night at The Old Chapel - "Piccadilly"

Piccadilly is a beautiful study of London in the 1920s, perfectly illustrating the contrast between high and low society, from the immigrant slums of Limehouse to the opulent nightclubs of Soho. A beautiful Chinese dancer is discovered working in the kitchen by a Soho nightclub owner and showcased as his new novelty act - with dramatic results. A fantastic film, on a par with Hitchcock’s best of this period.

Five piece Cornish bank Wurlitza have been gathering critical acclaim for their unique musical accompaniments to classic films. With a soundtrack ranging from classical piano, Spanish guitar, four part harmonies and jazz standards – all performed live – there is truly something for everyone in this amazing performance.

“What I particularly admired was Wurlitza’s skill in playing in perfect timing but also for a great choice of music.” Nick Bailey, Classic FM

£7 in advance, £8 on the door, £5 under 18s.

Doors open 7.00pm. Film starts 8.00pm.

Please note there will be no food served at this event.
